Stretch came to HHHA emaciated and heartworm positive. In addition to his health issues, Stretch was fearful and under socialized. It took Stretch almost 6 months to recover from his health issues just to be available for adoption! After he recovered, Stretch could socialize with humans and animals. Stretch not only joined play groups and went on runs with volunteers, but he also went to obedience class and events to make him more appealing for adopters. His recovery was amazing, but he kept being adopters’ second choice. When was he going to be someone’s first choice?! After spending a total of 300 days here at Hilton Head Humane Association, Stretch met his match. His adopter scooped him up and took him right home – she refused to keep Stretch at the shelter another minute! Stretch’s new mom called us a few days after he went home, asking what toys he likes to play with. She told us she has bought every imaginable toy and gift and he has not played with any of them yet – Stretch just wants his belly rubs! Maybe after they catch up on belly rubs he’ll enjoy his new treasure trove of toys! Stretch’s story shows us that with some patience and hard work, dogs can recover from their “previous lives” and move forward to live their best life! Congratulations, Stretch! We are so proud of you!
